Our story

A 16th-century hunting lodge, guardian of authentic stories

An ancient 16th-century hunting lodge that once belonged to the noble Acquaviva d’Aragona family, Masseria Montepaolo stands on a hillock overlooking a karst sinkhole, immersed in the Apulian countryside and surrounded by centuries-old olive groves, almond orchards, fruit orchards and Mediterranean scrub.

It lies within the Laghi di Conversano Regional Nature Reserve, an area protected by the WWF and once known as the land of oaks.

Torre del Brigante

200 metres from the main building stands the imposing Torre del Brigante (Brigand’s Tower), an ancient 14th-century stone structure.

the dovecote

Next to the Tower, the dovecote is easily recognised by its distinctive hemispherical roof of Byzantine influence.

Both the Tower and the dovecote are officially recognised as sites of historical and architectural interest.

The little church

Within the estate stands an ancient consecrated rural chapel, believed to have once been a hermitage dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua.

Inside, frescoes dating back to 1642 have been discovered, silent witnesses to the history of the place.

Centuries-old olive groves, our own olive oil

Farm

Montepaolo is not just a historic residence: it is also a working farm.

We tend our centuries-old olive groves and produce our own olive oil, the same oil you’ll find on the table in our restaurant and in the Oil and Preserves corner.

A direct connection with the land that accompanies every stay, from breakfast to the evening meal.

The Masseria's wildlife

Although it lies close to several towns, the Masseria is set within a protected nature park, surrounded by the Apulian countryside: it is not unusual to come across foxes, magpies and other typical countryside animals that are part of the local ecosystem.
